Smoke Detector Saves Mom and Two Small Kids
|
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The smoke and flames spread quickly, so fast that those inside the home didn't even realize there was a fire.
Barbara Milton says her daughter was in the living room and never even smelled smoke. Milton says the only thing that tipped her daughter off was the smoke detector.
"The smoke detector went off and she jumped up to see what was going on, and there was an electrical fire in the bedroom where the children were," says Milton.
Milton says her one and two-year-old grandchildren were asleep in the burning room. By the time their mom got to their bedroom, the two-year-old was already awake.
"The toddler had gotten off the bed and was standing looking at the fire, which was where a tv was plugged in. She grabbed the baby and toddler and got them out," says Milton.
Her daughter had a few burns on her hand but was treated and is fine. The children were not hurt.
While one corner of the home is destroyed, the rest has water and smoke damage.
The family wasn't able to save much, but they say that is all right, they are just glad the smoke detector did its job.
"Thank goodness, yes, we've already said our prayers because that's what saved them," says Milton.
The family is already making plans to rebuild the home and of course the plan is also to have a few smoke detectors around too. "That smoke detector did the job, and you can't say enough about them."
The Red Cross is putting the family up in a motel for the next couple of days, along with providing clothing and food.
Jacksonville Fire and Rescue says the cause of the fire is undetermined, but it does appear to be electrical.
